|As we gear up for The Retreat at Sparrows Lodge this weekend, we had a chance to catch up with the talented and always cool, Samantha Duenas, to talk DJing, her love of 90’s R&B and 143.|
How did you get into DJing?
I have a storied past of dancing, singing in bands and choirs, and musical theatre. Sometime in 2008, I was very unfulfilled at my 9-5 office job and was looking for a new musical creative outlet.
I grew up around a lot of DJs, and I thought it was time to give that a try as a hobby. So that was it, I just bought some hand-me-down equipment, and became obsessed with the craft. Over time it evolved from a hobby to a moonlighting gig, and now I get to do it for a living!
SOSUPERSAM is such a great DJ name- what’s the story behind it?
“SOSUPERSAM” was originally the name of my fashion blog in 2007. It was catchy and alliterative, and then when I started DJing a year later, the name just stuck.
What do you like to spin? Do you have a favorite genre of music?
I mainly play future bass, rap, hip hop, R&B, a little techno, a little house, a little indie. My favorite genre of music is
Your 143 parties are so brilliant- what was the inspiration behind it?
143 is old pager code for “I LOVE YOU” and that’s what I call my monthly steamy R&B party where we play anything from SZA to Brandy to Sade to Jodeci. I throw it with my friends, Ken and Cody, out of a simple longing to play bedroom music really loud in public.
We’ve been doing it for 2 years now! Our DJ pals come and play, and this year we started bringing in secret performers — a few months ago Sisqo sang “Thong Song” with full dance choreography. It was incredible.
If you had to choose one song to be your anthem what would it be?
Imma Star (Everywhere We Are) by Jeremih ft Soulja Boy
